U.S. Milk Output Rises in JanuaryWASHINGTON - Feb 19/09 - SNS -- The 23 major producing states in the United States produced 14.9 billion pounds, up 1.0% from January 2008, according to the USDA. December revised production at 14.7 billion pounds, was up 1.8% from December 2007. The December revision represented an increase of 44 million pounds or 0.3% from last month’s preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,746 pounds for January, 5 pounds above January 2008. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.51 million head, 58,000 head more than January 2008, and 12,000 head less than December 2008. The annual production of milk for the U.S. during 2008 was 190 billion pounds, 2.3% above 2007. Revisions to 2007 production increased the annual total 52 million pounds.
