Solid Improvement in SA Corn YieldsPRETORIA - Feb 20/03 - STAT -- South Africa is looking for a significantly bigger corn crop than initially expected, with production for the 2002-03 season forecast at 8.84 million metric tons (MT), down from last year's 9.1 million MT result. In releasing its latest estimate, the South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS) predicted a solid increase in yields from last year's 2,716 kilograms per hectare to an average 2,946 kilograms this season. Interestingly, the latest numbers still do not contain an estimate for the developing agriculture category. Last year this accounted for 516,579 hectares and 317,134 MT of corn.
