Broiler Hatchery Mainly Higher on Week
WASHINGTON - Feb 11/09 - SNS -- U.S. broiler hatchery activity advancing from week earlier levels over the week finishing February 7, 2009 but managed a mixed performance compared to last year, reveals today's USDA sector report.
Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 201.0 million eggs in incubators during the week. This was down 7.4% from the eggs set the same week last year.
Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
Broiler growers placed 167.0 million chicks for meat production. Placements were down 5.1% from the comparable week a year earlier.
