Ukraine Needs to Reseed 2 Million HectaresKIEV - Feb 19/03 - APK -- Ukraine's Minister of Agrarian Policy Serhiy Ryzhuk believes the farmers will have to reseed in spring around 2 million hectares of winter crops killed by frosts this winter, a spokesman for the Ministry has said. As of February 14 it was known about complete loss of winter barley plantings (over 700,000 hectares) and of 300,000 hectares of winter rape. The Minister earlier estimated between 1.5 million and 1.7 million hectares of crops would need to be reseeded. In other central European news, there are reports over 145,000 hectares of winter crops in Moldova have been damaged by December frosts. The tests have shown that the damaged crops were sown in later terms than those recommended by agriculture scientists and were not able to finish earing before the first frosts. Besides, 35,000 hectares of winter wheat and almost 11,000 hectares of winter barley that did not shoot out before the frosts are now in doubtful condition, specialists said.
