Drought Devastated Australian Pulse HarvestSYDNEY - Feb 17/03 - STAT -- The latest crop production estimates released by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) painted a startling picture for the Australian pulse industry for the season. The numbers make it clear the country would not be a factor in world markets until next year's season harvest becomes available in the October and November shipping period. Production of the five classes of pulses watched by ABARE plunged 17.5% from the December crop report to a combined total of 1,008,000 metric tons (MT). More importantly, the harvest is less than half the 2.51 million MT grown in 2001-02 and less than half the previous year average pulse crop of 2.44 million MT.
