Turkey Hatchery Activity Slows in JanuaryWASHINGTON - Feb 12/03 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity slowed during January in the United States, with the USDA showing declines in both the number of eggs in incubators and poults placed as of February 1. On that date, turkey eggs in incubators on February 1, 2003, in the United States totaled 30.7 million, down 4% from February 1 a year ago. Eggs in incubators were slightly below the January 1 total of 30.8 million. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central, down 3% at 4,794,000 eggs; West North Central, down 1% at 11,292,000; North and South Atlantic, down 3% at 9,569,000; South Central, down 18% at 2,531,000; and West, down 6% at 2,511,000 eggs in incubators.
