AgCanada Sees Lower Chickpea Returns

VANCOUVER - Dec 12/08 - SNS -- In its latest monthly review of Canadian chickpeas Agriculture Canada's market analysis branch in Winnipeg reports this year's seeded area will total 205,000 acres, unchanged from last month.

It reports production for 2008 totalled 80,000 MT, down 45,000 from last month's prediction.

Agriculture Canada is forecasting exports for 2008-09 at 70,000 MT, down 15,000 on the month. Domestic use in 2008-09 is estimated at 65,000 MT, down 10,000 on the month.

Season ending stocks are forecast at 45,000 MT by the close of the 2008-09 marketing year, down 20,000 on the month.

Agriculture Canada forecast grower bids will range between $530 and $560 for 2008-09 for all classes of chickpeas, versus between $570 and $600 in last month's report.
