Mixed Finish For North American Lentils

VANCOUVER - Dec 6/08 - SNS -- North American lentil markets posted a mixed finish, though on a mostly easier note as some traders took advantage of a weaker Canadian dollar to try to attract fresh demand.

Markets in the United States, by contrast, continue to be supported by strong demand from the USDA for shipment as food aid.

The quantity of lentils bought or under tender for shipment from origin through the end of January totals 36,470 metric tons (MT), up from 24,220 MT the first five months of the 2007-08 marketing campaign. Total pulse purchases are up 64% at 150,570 MT, with field pea purchases up 42% at 74,530 MT and dry edible bean purchases more than double last season at 39,570 MT.
