Southern United States Pecan MarketPHOENIX - Feb 6/03 - SNS -- Pecan market conditions and prices were updated for Arizona, New Mexico And West Texas in this report from the USDA. PECAN REPORT. ---ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS Deliveries by growers to buying points were moderate for large lots and light for small lots. Demand was good. Prices paid to growers were slightly higher for large lots and about steady for limited small lot sales. Harvesting is expected to be completed by the end of this week. Buying interest as displayed by end users was good for the remaining uncommitted supplies. Trading was active late last week but slowed this week. Most growers have marketed their crop on a cash basis or have established agreements with users with arrangements to market their crop with varying provisions made for pricing and for time of final payment, delivery, method of payment and storage. A few growers remain reluctant to accept offers at current price levels delaying making marketing decisions instead continuing to store harvested nuts for later sale. Harvested and delivered quality has been very good with lots of Western Schley ranging 56-60 per cent meat yield with most lots 58 percent meat yield quality or better and displaying well-filled nuts and good kernel color. Temperatures have remained cold enough to prohibit embryo sprouting and to maintain good kernel color. Prices paid to growers from Thursday afternoon, January 30, 2003 to noon Thursday, February 6, 2003 at delivery point or F.O.B. the orchard. In lots in excess of 20,000 pounds mostly truckload lots of 40,000 pounds or more Improved varieties mostly Western Schley 58 percent meat yield or better $2.10-2.25 per point mostly $2.20 per point. Lots less than 5000 pounds Various varieties cents per pound inshell 55 per cent meat yield or better according to quality and lot size few sales 80-100 best mostly 90-100 poorer quality low as 60 occasional higher.
