Turkey Hatchery Declined In AugustWASHINGTON - Oct 14/08 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity in the United States declined in September, with fewer eggs placed in incubators and less poults hatched than last year, according to the latest USDA report on the sector. Turkey eggs in incubators on October 1, 2008, in the United States totaled 28.3 million, down 6% from October 1, 2007. Eggs in incubators were down slightly from the September 1, 2008 total of 28.4 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down 9% at 4,059,000; West North Central down 8% at 11,289,000; North and South Atlantic up 9% at 10,621,000; and South Central and West down 37% at 2,336,000 eggs in incubators. Turkey poults hatched during September 2008, in the United States totaled 23.7 million, down 2% from September 2007. Poults hatched were down 6% from August 2008 total of 25.3 million poults.
