Daily Midwest Livestock Summary

AMARILLO - Oct 10/08 - SNS -- Market conditions for cattle, hogs and

lambs in the major markets in the U.S. midwest are summarized in the latest daily report from the USDA.



Daily Livestock Summary

                                     CATTLE
Direct Trade:
   In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas,
Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota.  Trading was mostly
light in all feeding regions with light demand.  Compared to Wednesday, a few
live sales in Iowa/Minnesota sold steady to 1.00 lower.  Compared to last week
dressed sales in Colorado sold sharply lower trending mostly 12.00 lower.  Not
enough sales reported in all other areas to establish a market trend.  Steers:
Live basis: (all Grades: 2,460 head) 85.00-90.00, weight average price 87.14.
Dressed basis; (all Grades: 759 head) 135.00-140.00, weighted average 136.12.
Heifers: Live basis; (all Grades: 1,079 head) 88.00-90.00, weight average price
89.42.  Dressed Basis; (all Grades: 3,217 head) 136.00-140.00, weight average
price 139.54.
For the week - Trade was fully established on Wednesday with mostly moderate
demand.  Live sales in the Southern Plains sold 4.00-5.00 lower from 91.00-
93.00.  Dressed sales in Kansas sold 6.00 lower from 146.00-147.00.  Live sales
in Nebraska sold mostly 3.00 lower from 90.00-94.00, mostly 91.00.  Live sales
in Iowa/Minnesota sold 5.00 lower from 88.00-89.00.  Dressed sales in Colorado
sold 12.00 lower at 140.00.  Dressed sales in Nebraska and the Western Cornbelt
sold mostly 6.00-8.00 lower from 138.00-142.00.
Auction Markets:

   New Holland, PA - New Holland Sales Stables on Thursday
When compared to last Thursday's sale, a light test of slaughter steers sold
sharply lower.  High Choice and Prime steers sold 5.00 lower, Choice steers sold
3.00-5.00 lower.  Heifers were only lightly tested.
   Slaughter Steers:  High Choice and Prime 2-3 1165-1468 lbs 87.50-89.25, few
to 90.00; full/YG 4-5 85.75-87.00.  Choice 2-3 1130-1495 lbs 86.50-88.00.  High
Select and low Choice 2-3 1063-1420 lbs 83.75-86.50.
   Slaughter Heifers:  Choice 2-3  1150-1500 lbs 86.75-88.50.  High Select and
low Choice 2-3  920-1250 lbs 71.00-72.50.

The average live weight of cattle slaughtered in the Texas Panhandle for the
week ending 10-04-2008 was 1286 lbs with 32 percent heifers compared to 1276
lbs and 41 percent heifers the previous week and 1271 lbs and 42 percent heifers
the same week a year ago.

Direct Trade:
   Dressed Basis: The direct hog trade prices are based on 185 lbs hog carcass
with 0.9-1.1 inch back fat and 6 inch square loin/2.0 inch depth plant
delivered.  National direct trade barrows and gilts 1.03 lower at 54.00-69.86,
weighted average 62.84.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.35 lower at 54.00-66.69, weighted
average 63.73.  Western Cornbelt 1.37 lower at 54.00-69.86 weighted average
63.78 and Eastern Cornbelt .48 higher at 55.00-63.51, weighted average 61.50.

   Live Basis (240-280 lbs): National direct barrows and gilt 1.11 lower at
41.82-53.50 weighted average 48.67.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.67 lower at 41.82-51.52,
weighted average 48.28.  Western Cornbelt 1.86 lower at 41.82-51.52, weighted
average 48.10.  Eastern Cornbelt .30 higher at 43.02-53.50, weighted average
49.77.

For the week: Barrows and gilts in the National, Iowa-Minnesota, Western and
Eastern Cornbelt sold 4.37 lower.
