August Pea Exports Down on Year

VANCOUVER - Sep 29/08 - SNS -- The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) reports field pea exports in August totalled 51,600 metric tons (MT) through licensed terminal facilities, which are required to report to it all grain movement.

The CGC exports are down from the 116,400 MT shipped the same month last year and up from the 50,400 MT shipped the previous month. The CGC reports field pea exports so far during the 2008 calendar year total 706,600 MT, down from 746,600 the first eight months of 2007.

All field peas exported in August moved through terminal elevators in Vancouver. The 2007-08 season ended with exporters shipping 1,518,800 MT at Vancouver; 96,800 MT at Thunder Bay; 11,800 at Port Cartier; 8,000 MT at Sorel; and 100 MT direct from Prairie elevators.

Reviewing shipments by destination for the month, the CGC reports all peas shipments it recorded in August went to India. Last year, India took 116,400 MT of peas in August. In 2006, Spain took 20,800 MT and India 44,900 MT.
