Freight Tonnage Off in JulyOTTAWA - Sep 24/08 - SNS -- Freight handled by Canada's railway industry dropped 6.4% in July to 23.0 million metric tons (MT), according to Statistics Canada. The drop in loadings was primarily attributable to a decline in non-intermodal loadings of wheat, coal, iron ore and concentrates, and forestry related products, such as lumber and newsprint. Combined, these commodities helped push non-intermodal loadings down to 20.5 million MT, a decrease of 7.3% from last year's level. Intermodal loadings, by contrast, rose 1.3% from July last year, to 2.5 million MT. Both containerized shipments and trailers loaded on flat cars saw increases. Rail freight traffic coming from the United States increased 9.5% from July 2007 to 2.9 million MT.
