Turkey Hatchery Maintains DeclineWASHINGTON - Sep 12/08 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity in the United States continued to decline during August, with the number of poults hatched and eggs in incubators declining, according to the latest USDA data. Turkey eggs in incubators on September 1, 2008, in the United States totaled 28.6 million, down 7 percent from September 1, 2007. Eggs in incubators were down 10 percent from the August 1, 2008 total of 31.9 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down 1% at 4,570,000; West North Central down 3% at 11,498,000; North and South Atlantic down 5% at 9,920,000; and South Central and West down 33% at 2,656,000 eggs in incubators. Turkey poults hatched during August 2008, in the United States totaled 25.6 million, down 5 percent from August 2007. Poults hatched were down 8 percent from July 2008 total of 27.6 million poults.
