Smaller Summer Pulse Crop in IndiaVANCOUVER - Sep 12/08 - SNS -- Modest seeding activity took place in India during the past week, for a modest increase in the number of acres sown to pulses during the current kharif or monsoon season. Total land in pulses stands at 10.18 million hectares, down 15.3% from the 12.02 million sown by this time last year. There is no longer any opportunity for the gap to be made up. India's agriculture department says land in rice now stands at 36.88 million hectares, up 5.3% from the 35.03 million sown by this time last year. Area in oilseeds is also higher, rising 2% from 17.31 to 17.65 million hectares. On the other hand, land in coarse grains is down 7.1% at 19.52 million hectares.
