Mixed Finish for LentilsVANCOUVER - Sep 5/08 - SNS -- North American lentils finished a short, four-day trading week on a mixed note. Markets in the United States were buoyed by massive USDA PL-480 buying for shipment as food aid. Government buyers paid an average U.S. $50.77 per 100 pounds (cwt) for 12,430 metric tons (MT) for October shipment from origin and tendered for another 7,290 MT for shipment from origin between October 16 and November 6. Prospective and actual U.S. government lentil purchases now total 23,080 MT for shipment during the 2008-09 marketing campaign, possibly representing 17% of this year's harvest, making the government the dominant influence in markets at this time.
