Daily Midwest Livestock Summary

AMARILLO - Sep 5/08 - SNS -- Market conditions for cattle, hogs and

lambs in the major markets in the U.S. midwest are summarized in the latest daily report from the USDA.


Daily Livestock Summary

                                     CATTLE
Direct Trade:
   In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas,
Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota.  Trading was
moderate to active in the South Plains with moderate to good demand.  Compared
to last week live sales in the South Plains sold steady.  Dressed sales in
Kansas sold steady.  Trading was light to moderate in the Northern Plains with
moderate demand.  Compared to last week lives sales in Colorado sold mostly
steady.  Nebraska live sales sold mostly 1.00 lower and dressed sold 1.00-2.00
lower.  Iowa/Minnesota live sales sold steady to .50 lower and dressed sales
steady to 2.00 lower.  Steers: Live basis: (all Grades: 37,585 head) 94.00-
99.50, weighted average price 98.79.  Dressed basis; (all Grades: 8,237 head)
152.00-156.50, weighted average price 154.93.  Heifers: Live basis; (all Grades:
35,189 head) 95.00-99.50, weighted average prices 98.87.  Dressed Basis; (all
Grades: 5,135 head) 153.00-156.00, weighted average price 155.38.

For the week: Trading was moderate to active in the South Plains with moderate
to good demand.  Compared to last week live sales in the South Plains sold
steady at 99.00.  Dressed sales in Kansas sold steady at 156.00.  Trading was
light to moderate in the Northern Plains with moderate demand.  Compared to last
week lives sales in Colorado sold mostly steady at 99.00.  Nebraska live sales
sold mostly 1.00 lower from 98.00-98.50 and dressed sales 1.00-2.00 lower from
154.00-155.00.  Iowa/Minnesota live sales were steady to .50 lower at 97.00-
97.50 and dressed sold steady to 2.00 lower at 153.00-155.00.

Auction Markets:
   New Holland, PA - New Holland Sales Stables on Thursday
Compared to last week: Slaughter steers sold 1.00 lower.  Slaughter heifers sold
2.00 in a light market test.  Slaughter Steers: High Choice and Prime 2-3: 1193-
1535 lbs 95.00-98.25, few 98.75-99.00; full/YG 4-5: 92.00-93.50; 1550-1585 lbs
93.50-94.50.  Choice 2-3: 1160-1485 lbs 92.00-95.00.  High Select and low Choice
2-3: 1090-1440 lbs 90.00-92.00.  Slaughter Heifers: High Choice and Prime 2-3:
1135-1330 lbs 93.00-95.25.  Choice 2-3: 1115-1370 lbs 91.00-93.00.

The average live weight of cattle slaughtered in the Texas Panhandle for the
week ending 08-30-2008 was 1261 lbs with 39 percent heifers compared to 1266
lbs and 35 percent heifers the previous week and 1263 lbs and 38 percent heifers
the same week a year ago.

for a market test, but a higher undertone noted.

Direct Trade:
   Dressed Basis: The direct hog trade prices are based on 185 lbs hog carcass
with 0.9-1.1 inch back fat and 6 inch square loin/2.0 inch depth plant
delivered.  National direct trade barrows and gilts 1.13 higher at 63.00-75.00,
weighted average 72.03.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.13 higher at 63.00-75.00, weighted
average 73.04.  Western Cornbelt 1.23 higher at 63.00-75.00, weighted average
73.06 and Eastern Cornbelt .43 higher at 66.56-73.49, weighted average 69.77.

   Live Basis (240-280 lbs): National direct barrows and gilt .18 lower at
49.87-64.28, weighted average 55.24.  Iowa-Minnesota .60 lower at 50.65-57.00,
weighted average 55.11.  Western Cornbelt .33 lower at 50.43-64.28, weighted
average 55.33.  Eastern Cornbelt 1.49 higher at 49.87-57.00, weighted average
55.09.

For the week: Barrows and gilts in the National, Iowa-Minnesota, Western and
Eastern Cornbelt sold 2.23 higher.
