Turkey's Lentil Import Policy Change

WASHINGTON - Jul 23/08 - SNS -- The U.S. agricultural attache for Turkey has provided precise details of the change in import duties on lentils and the authorization given to the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) to import product in 2007-08.

The U.S. agricultural attache reports:

The Turkish Government drastically reduced import duties for lentils on July 4, 2008. Promulgated by a Council of Ministers Decree and published in the Official Gazette, the reductions are effective immediately. All importers will now be charged the reduced duty rates for lentils. Please see the table below for old and new customs duty rates:

   The same decree also gave authority to the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) to purchase 100,000 MT of red lentil (HS Code: 0713.40.00.00.13) before May 31, 2009 with a zero duty. According to TMO officials, TMO will announce a new tender to purchase red lentils but the date is not yet decided.
