Upper U.S. Midwest Organic Grain and Feedstuffs

DES MOINES - Jul 16/08 - SNS -- Bi-weekly USDA report on organic grain and feedstuffs prices in the U.S. upper midwest.

Upper Midwest Organic Grain & Feedstuffs Report (Bi-Weekly)
Weighted Average Report for the Week Ending 07/12/08

Compared to two weeks ago, organic grain and feedstuff prices were mostly
steady on moderate demand and light offerings. The main concern right now
is the livestock industry, which is beginning to really hurt from high organic
grain prices. Beef cattle, dairy cattle and chickens are being turned back
to conventional. Some organically raised cattle are being put on grass only.
Producers are inquiring about new crop prices but are reluctant to do anything
for 2 reasons. One, some producers don't know what kind of crop they will
have after the tough planting season. Two, some producers have a great
crop but feel that prices could go higher. Additionally, buyers are facing
a lot of uncertainty about fuel charges. Shipping companies are starting
to hit their customers with some hefty fuel surcharges. Organic alfalfa is
looking rough too. It's had too much rain and not enough heat. RFVs are
not very high. New crop bids are as follows: feed grade corn from $9.50
to $11.00; feed grade soybeans from $23.00 to $24.00; food grade soybeans
from $28.00 to $32.00; spring wheat from $18.00 to $24.00; winter wheat
from $15.00 to $19.00; feed grade oats from $5.50 to $7.00. A large
number of bushels of new crop organic winter wheat have already been traded.
Monthly and second quarter average prices located below. All prices FOB the
farm and negotiated spot market.
