U.S. Sugarcane Area SlipsWASHINGTON - Jun 30/08 - SNS -- Area for harvest of sugarcane for sugar and seed during the 2008 crop year in the United States is forecast at 871,500 acres, down 1% from 2007, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates. Area for harvest in Louisiana is down 15,000 acres from last year, while Florida growers expect to harvest 12,000 more acres than last year. In Louisiana, crop conditions for sugarcane have been improving from mostly fair to good, to good and excellent. For the week ending June 1, Louisiana's sugarcane crop conditions were rated 22% excellent, 51% good, 22% fair, and 5% poor. In Florida, sporadic rains during May boosted growth.
