Red Meat Output Under Year AgoWASHINGTON - May 23/08 - SNS -- Commercial red meat for the United States totalled 4.30 billion pounds in April, up 14% from the 3.75 billion pounds produced in April 2007, reveals the latest USDA data. Beef production, at 2.25 billion pounds, was 12% above last year. Cattle slaughter totalled 2.96 million head, up 10% from April 2007. The average live weight was up 24 pounds from the previous year, at 1,259 pounds. Veal production totalled 11.9 million pounds, 1% above April a year ago. Calf slaughter totalled 73,300 head, up 29% from April 2007. The average live weight was down 70 pounds from last year, at 278 pounds. Pork production totalled 2.02 billion pounds, up 18% from the previous year. Hog kill totalled 9.99 million head, up 18% from April 2007. The average live weight was down 1 pound from the previous year, at 269 pounds. Lamb and mutton production, at 15.3 million pounds, was up 2% from April 2007.
