Chickpeas Unaffected By Australian ForecastVANCOUVER - May 167/08 - SNS -- International chickpea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week on tightening supplies of large caliber product from Mexico because of a recent downtrend in crop production levels. Markets were unaffected by the latest crop production estimates form Pulse Australia. It left the country's 2007 harvest estimates unchanged at 28,400 metric tons (MT) of desi and 24,550 MT of kabuli chickpeas. The industry group is forecasting 2008 kabuli area will rise from 23,800 to 34,700 hectares, while desi area advances from 282,200 to 286,300 hectares.
