Current Weather Situation and Future Developments:
A high over the Tasman Sea in combination with a trough, presently over the
Bight region, is generating a band of showers and thunderstorms in the west and
the northeast which will drift towards the remainder of the ranges tonight. The
cloud band should then move to the Tasman Sea during Friday. The trough will
still be west of Tasmania on Friday by which time it will be reinforced by a
strong cold front, presently developing south of Western Australia. This second
system will bring unseasonably cold weather into the state over the weekend.
Snow is expected over the Southern and Central Tablelands and possibly the
Northern Tablelands overnight Saturday and Sunday.
Forecast for Friday
Showers contracting east and clearing the coast during the morning. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms redeveloping during the day on the ranges and western
slopes. Freshening northwest to northeast winds.
Forecast for Saturday
Scattered showers or rain in the west, spreading to the east during the day.
Isolated thunderstorms in most districts. Snow showers developing about Alpine
peaks, falling to lower levels late in the day. North to northwest winds,
turning cold southwesterly in the south and west.
Forecast for Sunday
Cold south to southwest winds extending throughout. Scattered showers about the
ranges and western slopes. Isolated showers in the far west and along the coast.
Snow about the higher ranges, particularly in the morning.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated showers along the ranges and western slopes, clearing from the north.
Fine elsewhere. Cool to cold southwest winds.
