Myanmar Ships Record Q1 Pulse Volume

VANCOUVER - May 14/08 - SNS -- Myanmar recorded its best first quarter pulse export volume on record, helped along by massive import demand from India, which remains the country's most important customer.

Shipments in March were up 90% from year earlier levels at 288,839 metric tons (MT) of dry edible beans and pulses. This lifted exports during the first quarter of the 2008 calendar year to 518,912 MT, compared to 301,135 MT during the same three month period last year and the 263,099 MT exported between January and March of 2006.

In March, mung beans accounted for 37% of the total exports, followed by Matpe (32%) and Toor Whole (Pigeon pea) 21%. India was the most important destination, taking 91% of the total or 262,491 MT. Japan, a regular market for Burmese Butter beans (Lima beans), imported 1,988 metric tons of Burmese Butter beans.
