Red Lentils Surge in Heavy DemandVANCOUVER - Apr 25/08 - SNS -- Lentil markets finished the week's trading on a relatively strong note, led higher by news Syria has banned exports of lentils and other pulses. The ban had an immediate impact on importers in the Middle East, leaving them short of whole and split red lentils in both nearby and deferred shipping positions, resulting i n strong demand for available supplies of Canadian old crop red lentils. Unfortunately, stocks on farms in western Canada are relatively tight and growers are too distracted by efforts to seed this year's crops to participate fully in markets. Record low temperatures in much of Alberta and Saskatchewan combined with snowfall events during the past week to bring seeding to a halt in most areas.
