Sunflower Acreage to ExpandWASHINGTON - Mar 31/08 - SNS -- Sunflower growers expect to plant a total of 2.15 million acres in 2008, up 4% from last year and up 10% from 2006, according to this year's USDA seeding intentions estimates. Area intended for oil type varieties, at 1.85 million acres, is up 5% from 2007, and area for non-oil varieties, estimated at 305,000 acres, is up fractionally from last year. Growers in North Dakota intend to plant 1.05 million acres of sunflowers in 2008, down 30,000 from 2007, and growers in Nebraska are expecting an acreage decrease this year of 4,000 acres. In contrast, growers in South Dakota intend to plant 450,000 acres, up 35,000 acres from the previous year. Acreage increases are also expected in Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, and Texas.
