Hatchery Turkey Numbers ImproveWASHINGTON - Mar 14/08 - SNS -- The number of turkeys in hatcheries in the United States improved in February, according to the USDA. Turkey eggs in incubators on March 1, 2008, in the United States totaled 31.9 million, up 2% from March 1, 2007. Eggs in incubators were up 1% from the February 1, 2008 total of 31.5 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down 7% at 4,565,000; West North Central little changed at 12,099,000; North and South Atlantic up 7% at 10,509,000; and South Central and West up 8% at 4,754,000 eggs in incubators. Turkey poults hatched during February 2008, in the United States totaled 25.8 million, up 4% from February 2007. Poults hatched were down 5% from the January 2008 total of 27.0 million poults.
