PHOENIX PECAN REPORT.
---ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS
Deliveries by growers to buying points were fairly heavy. Demand was good.
Prices paid to growers were higher. Harvesting is generally complete in all
areas. Most growers have finished grading and drying and continue to deliver
remaining nuts.
Low temperatures this week ranged from the mid 30s to lower 40s with highs in
the upper 50s to lower 70s with dry conditions.
Harvested quality has been variable with a wide range of quality defects
displayed in many lots including kernel discoloration, embryo rot and sprouting.
Buying interest displayed by end users has been fairly good for commercial
sheller use. Export interest for shipment to China was good. Trading has been
fairly active for remaining available supplies. Many growers have marketed their
nuts or have established agreements with users with arrangements made to market
their crop with provisions made for price, time of delivery, storage and method
of payment. A few growers are delaying making marketing decisions instead opting
to store nuts for later sale.
Prices paid to growers from Thursday afternoon, January 31, 2008 to noon
Thursday, February 07, 2008 at delivery point or F.O.B. the orchard in-shell.
Lots in excess of 20,000 pounds, Improved varieties mostly Western Schley 52-
55% mostly 53-54% meat yield $2.60-2.80 per point few high as $3.00 per point,
few low as $2.50 per point.
Lots of less than 1,000 pounds Improved varieties mostly Western Schley 48-54%
mostly 51-53% meat yield cents per pound according to quality and lot size 80-110
mostly 90-110 few higher, poorer quality lower.
