Rabi Seeding Nears Completion in IndiaVANCOUVER - Feb 1/08 - SNS -- Seeding of India's rabi or winter season crop is nearing completion, with area under crop generally below last year. Rabi pulses cover 13.155 million hectares, down 4.8% from 13.811 million at this time last year. Gram or desi type chickpea coverage area has fallen from 8.324 to 7.995 million hectares. Wheat area has dropped from 28.063 to 27.567 million hectares as of February 1, while land in winter rice has slipped from 2.006 to 1.984 million hectares. Coarse grain cereal coverage has dropped from 6.94 to 6.777 million hectares, with barley coverage now standing at 757,000 and corn at 1.035 million hectares. Rabi oilseeds have plunged from 9.665 to 8.797 million hectares. Within the sector, mustard/rapeseed area has fallen from 6.667 to 5.904 million hectares.
