Thailand Boosts Skim Milk Powder QuotaBANGKOK - Jan 26/08 - SNS -- Thailand increased its skimmed milk powder import quota from by another 20,971 metric tons (MT) earlier this month, reports the U,S. agricultural attache for the country. The quota is on top of a WTO-committed amount of 55,000 MT and a quota of 2,200 MT for Australia under Thai-Australia Free Trade Area (FTA). The in-quota tariff for the additional quota and WTO-committed quota (75,791 MT altogether) is 5% while the out-quota tariff is 216%. The import window is valid until December 31, 2008. The in-quota tariff for Australia under the FTA is 5% and the out-quota tariff is 194%. According to the Cabinet's synopsis, the quota will not hurt local dairy farmers since domestic production is currently insufficient to meet demand and global prices are currently high from a tight supply situation. It was also reported in the synopsis that Thailand imported 57,200 MT in 2007. All imports were under the import quota, of which were allocated to condensed milk processors (19,283 MT), processed food manufacturers (22,775 MT), and yogurt product manufacturers (15,142 MT).
