Lowered U.S. Canola Estimate

WASHINGTON - Jan 11/08 - SNS -- Canola production for the United States in 2007 is 1.45 billion pounds, up 4% from 2006 but down 3% from the October forecast, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) final crop report for 2007.

The yield, at 1,250 pounds per acre, is down 116 pounds from last year's yield and down 62 pounds from October. Planted area is estimated at 1.18 million acres, 13% above last year's acreage. Harvested area, at 1.16 million acres, is up 14% from 2006. Production in North Dakota, the leading canola-producing State, is estimated at 1.33 billion pounds, up 4% from last year due to a 14% increase in harvested acreage.
