Sharp Drop in Hawaiian GingerWASHINGTON - Jan 11/08 - SNS -- Hawaii ginger root production for the 2006-07 season is estimated at 2.80 million pounds, down 35% from the previous season, according to the USDA final crop report for 2007. Harvested area, at 80 acres, is down 20% from the 2005-06 season. Average yield is 35,000 pounds per harvested acre, down 8,000 pounds from the previous season. The amount of rainfall for the year was less than ideal for ginger root production. The number of ginger root growers continues to decline due to the increase in imports of lower priced ginger root from China.
