Jordan Cuts Import DutiesVANCOUVER - Jan 3/08 - SNS -- The Jordanian government has eliminated import duties and sales taxes on 13 essential commodities in an effort to tame food price inflation. Affected commodities include lentils, chickpeas, milk, cheese, vermicelli, coffee, tea, wheat, yellow corn, rice, corn flour, palm oil and sugar. Government officials expect this to result in up to a 10% reduction in retail food costs. However, Jordan will also eliminate subsidies on foods after the draft budget for 2008 is approved by the country's parliament. The impact will be moderated by a proposed social safety net and increased salaries for civil servants, army personnel, schoolteachers, judges, public university faculties and pensioners.
