USDA Christmas Gift For LentilsVANCOUVER - Dec 21/07 - SNS -- North American lentil markets were buoyed by the latest USDA PL-480 food aid tender, which delivered an early Christmas present to processors in the United States. The USDA is seeking 12,020 metric tons (MT) of lentils for shipment in February to Sudan and 230 MT for Nepal. This lifted actual and prospective lentil purchases by the U.S. government to 37,040 MT, compared to 25,740 MT at this time last year. The USDA is the biggest consumer of U.S. origin lentils, with food aid accounting for 47% of exports last season, 63% in 2005-06 and 89% in 2004-05. Purchases so far this season account for 35% of forecast export sales activity. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
