Record Shipping Costs to JapanWASHINGTON - Dec 6/07 - SNS -- The cost of shipping wheat from the U.S. midwest to Japan through the Pacific Northwest continues to escalate, establishing new record high, according to the USDA's Transportation and Marketing Programs/Transportation Services Branch weekly grain transportation report. "Third quarter wheat transportation costs from North Dakota and Kansas to Japan through the Pacific Northwest (PNW) jumped to $115.65 and $123.92 per metric ton (MT)," the USDA wrote. "The cost of shipping from both states to Japan through the U.S. Gulf averaged $130.29 and $143.67 per metric ton. "Third quarter wheat transportation costs are also the highest on record. As in the second quarter, the increases were driven by ocean freight rates. The total landed cost (farm value plus transportation costs) to Japan ranged from $336 to $364 per metric ton."
