First Quarter Pea Exports FalterVANCOUVER - Nov 1/07 - SNS -- Field pea exports during the opening quarter of the 2007-08 marketing year slipped below year earlier levels, according to data reported by members of the Canadian Ports Clearance Association. Clearances at terminals reporting to the association totalled 565,411 metric tons (MT) for the opening three months of the marketing year. This compares to 570,011 MT last year and is well below the record 630,558 MT shipped during the first quarter of the 2005-06 marketing campaign. A precipitous decline in feed peas sales to Spain and other European buyers is the key reason Canada is not setting new export shipping records for field peas. Though available supplies of field peas are up in Canada, a stupendous increase in opening season demand for whole green and yellow peas from the Indian subcontinent has combined with a strong Canadian dollar to make it hard for exporters to sell feed peas.
