lambs in the major markets in the U.S. midwest are summarized in the latest daily report from the USDA.

                                     CATTLE
Direct Trade:
   In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas,
Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota: not enough sales for
an adequate market trend.  Steers: Live basis; (all Grades: 14 head) 91.00.
Dressed basis; (all Grades: 447 head) 140.00-143.00, weighted average 141.15.
Heifers: live basis; (all Grades: 77 head) 90.00-91.50, weighted average 91.11.
Dressed Basis; (all Grades: 345 head) 140.00-143.00, weighted average 142.21.

Auction markets:
  Tama Slaughter Cattle Auction - Tama, IA on Wednesday
Compared to last week choice steers and heifers steady to .75 lower, with heavy
cattle discounted the most.  Slaughter Steers Choice 2-4: 1208-1650 lbs 84.50-
92.85.  Select and Choice 2-3: 1179-1488 lbs 88.75-90.75.  Slaughter Heifers
Choice 2-4: 1144-1415 lbs 89.00-91.35.  Select and Choice 2-3: 1075-1493 lbs
88.50-90.00.

price 53.29.  Iowa-Minnesota .08 lower at 41.00-57.50, weighted average price
54.50.  Western Cornbelt .21 lower at 41.00-57.50, weighted average price
54.31 and the Eastern Cornbelt 1.38 lower at 42.00-55.00, weighted average price
51.48.

   Live Basis (240-280 lbs): National direct barrows and gilt 1.38 lower at
33.41-44.94, weighted average 41.59.  Iowa-Minnesota 2.00 lower at 37.91-44.94,
weighted average 42.42.  Western Cornbelt 2.40 lower at 33.41-44.94, weighted
average 42.02.  Eastern Cornbelt .79 lower at 34.12-42.75, weighted average

Terminal Markets:
   At Sioux Falls, barrows and gilts .50 higher with 49-51 percent lean 220-
280 lbs selling 38.00.
   At St. Joseph, barrows and gilts sold steady with 46-50 percent lean 240-280
