Cattle on Feed Drops 6 Percent in U.S.WASHINGTON - Sep 21/07 - SNS -- Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totalled 10.3 million head on September 1, 2007, judging from the current USDA update on the sector. The inventory was 6% below September 1, 2006 but 3% above September 1, 2005. Placements in feedlots within August totalled 2.12 million, 7% below 2006 but 6% above 2005. Net placements were 2.07 million. During August, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 490,000, 600-699 pounds were 440,000, 700-799 pounds were 549,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 640,000. Marketings of fed cattle during August totalled 2.07 million, virtually unchanged from 2006 but 2% above 2005. Other disappearance totalled 50,000 during August, 15% below 2006 and 6% below 2005.
