Hawaiian Papaya Usage Up in AugustWASHINGTON - Sep 12/07 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.41 million pounds for August 2007, up 1% from last month and 9% higher than the comparable month a year ago, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. Total area in crop for August is estimated at 2,135 acres, 23% higher than July 2007 but 1% less than August 2006. Harvested area totaled 1,395 acres, 72% higher than July of this year and up 5% from the same month last year. August weather was characterized as mostly sunny combined with occasional showers which benefitted orchard growth and development. Irrigation was stepped up to replenish soil moisture levels. In preparation for Hurricane Flosse, growers trimmed leaves from mature trees to prevent uprooting. Fortunately, Flosse was downgraded to a tropical storm and passed with no damage to orchards. Newly planted acreage made favorable progress. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
