Forecast Prune and Plum Harvest DownWASHINGTON - Aug 10/07 - SNS --Prunes and plums production in Idaho, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington is forecast at 13,700 tons, down 36% from last year but 51% higher than the record low in 2005, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Washington's forecast, at 4,200 tons, is down 22% from 2006 but 17% above the record low in 2005. A cold spring in Washington led to frost damage and poor pollination in prune orchards. Oregon's forecast, at 4,000 tons, is 62% below last year but 167% above 2005. Pollination was significantly reduced in orchards in the western part of the State due to rainy conditions during bloom, while growers along the northern border are expecting a good crop. Michigan's production is forecast at 3,500 tons, 3% below 2006 but 75% above 2005. Michigan growers experienced some loss due to an early April freeze. However, the remaining plum crop looks good.
