USDA Registers 11 Varieties

WASHINGTON - Aug 8/07 - SNS -- The USDA issued certificates of protection to developers of new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants, including: bean, cotton, cowpea, fescue, pea, peanut, barley, and lettuce.

The certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The certificates are:

- the Beryl R variety of bean, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Boise, Idaho;

- the ST 6636BR variety of cotton, developed by Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Company, St. Louis, Missouri;

- the Carolina Classic variety of cowpea, developed by Thaddeus Hillery Busbice, Cary, North Carolina;

- the Silverstar, Dynamic, and Apache III varieties of tall fescue, developed by Pure Seed Testing, Inc., Hubbard, Oregon;

- the Feisty and Boogie varieties of pea, developed by Brotherton Seed Co., Inc., Moses Lake, Washington;

- the Kelly, Moose, and Naches varieties of pea, developed by Crites-Moscow Growers, Inc., Moscow, Idaho; and

- the AT-3081R* variety of peanut, developed by Golden Peanut Company, LLC, Alpharetta, Georgia.

- the Merit 16 and Merit 57 varieties of spring barley, developed by Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc., Fort Collins, Colorado;

- the SR 5210 variety of red fescue, developed by Seed Research of Oregon, Corvallis, Oregon;

- the Passport, Valley Heart, and Tourist varieties of lettuce, developed by Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Inc., Oxnard, California; and

- the Whistler variety of pea, developed by ProGene Plant Research, L.L.C., Othello, Washington.

* In the United States, seed of this variety shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed, and shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act, which provides time-limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
