United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Aug 7/07 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

JULY 21, 28 AND AUGUST 04, 2007 IN THAT ORDER IN THOUSAND HUNDREDWEIGHT
(CWT) (100,000 LBS) UNITS.  EXPECTED MOVEMENT IS FOR THE PERIOD
AUGUST 05 ? AUGUST 18, 2007. PRICES ARE FOR MONDAY, AUGUST 06, 2007
COMPARED WITH MONDAY, JULY 30, 2007. UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED SALES ARE
F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS (INCLUDING DELIVERED SALES F.O.B. SHIPPING
POINT BASIS) OR PORT OF ENTRY AND EXTRA SERVICES ARE INCLUDED.  PRICES
REPRESENT OPEN (SPOT) MARKET SALES BY FIRST HANDLERS ON PRODUCT OF

   UNITED STATES---Shipments (includes imports) 806-735**-757---The top
shipping areas for the week, in order, were California, New Mexico,
Washington, Georgia, and Colorado.  **revised
   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY CALIFORNIA---Shipments 254-253-248---Movement
expected to remain about the same.  Trading slow with few booked to be
priced later.  Prices slightly lower.  Yellow Grano type 50 pound sacks
super colossal mostly 10.00, colossal 5.00-6.00, jumbo 4.00-5.00, medium
4.00-5.00.  White 50 pound sacks jumbo 8.00, medium 7.00-8.00.  Red
Globe type 25 pound sacks jumbo 6.00-8.00, medium mostly 6.00.  Decline
in Red Globe type prices due to pressure from new crop in other
competing areas.
   SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO---Shipments 292-258-203---Movement expected to
remain about the same.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices lower. Yellow Grano
50 pound sacks super colossal 12.00-14.00, colossal 8.00-9.00, jumbo
6.00-7.00, medium 7.00.  White 50 pound sacks jumbo mostly 12.00, medium
mostly 10.00.  Red Globe type 25 pound sacks jumbo 10.00, medium mostly
8.00.  Decline in Red Globe type prices due to pressure from new crop in
other competing areas.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON---Shipments 81-38-123 (includes export
26-10-23)---Movement expected to increase.  Trading slow.  Prices lower.
Yellow Hybrid 50 pound sacks colossal 5.50-6.00, jumbo mostly 4.50-5.00,
medium 5.00-6.00. Red Globe type 25 pound sacks jumbo 6.00-7.00, medium
mostly 5.00. Onion shipments for the month of July 2007 were 917 400
cwt.
   VIDALIA DISTRICT GEORGIA---Shipments 88-82-79---Movement expected to
decrease.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices generally unchanged.  Yellow
Granex U.S. One 40 pound cartons jumbo and medium mostly 18.00.
Shipments are from cold storage and Controlled Atmosphere storage.
   NORTH AND EAST POINTS COLORADO---Shipments 0-32-61---Movement
expected to increase.  Trading slow.  Prices lower. Yellow Hybrid
50 pound sacks super colossal 14.00-15.00, colossal 9.00, jumbo mostly
7.00, medium 7.00-8.00.  White 50 pound sacks jumbo 11.00-12.00, medium
mostly 10.00, Red Globe type 25 pound sacks jumbo mostly 11.00, medium
10.00.  July 2007 shipments for Colorado were 138 400 cwt which is down
51 percent from July 2006.
   WALLA WALLA DISTRICT, WASHINGTON---Shipments 28-26-20---Movement
expected to decrease seasonally.  Unofficial prices for Monday August 6
Yellow Walla Walla Sweets 40 pound cartons jumbo 14.00-15.00. July 2007
shipments were 337 400 cwt which was down 8 percent from last season
total of 370 400 cwt.
   IDAHO AND MALHUER COUNTY OREGON---Shipments 0-0-0---Due to current
market conditions, shippers and growers in the area have decided to hold
off on starting the harvest until the week of August 12 or later.
---POTATOES
   UNITED STATES---Shipments (not including imports) 1857-1786**-1917---
U.S. shipments for the week ending August 5, 2006 last season were
1,742,000 cwt.  **revised
   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT IDAHO---Shipments 2006
Season 688-570-586---Movement expected to decrease as more sheds finish
marketing the crop for the season.  Trading fairly active.  Prices
generally unchanged.  Russet Burbank U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags
non size A 4.50, 50 pound cartons 40s 11.50, 50-70s 9.00, 80s 8.00,
90s 7.00, 100s mostly 6.50-6.75.
   KANSAS---Shipments 7-105-209---Movement expected to increase.  All
supplies are going to shippers located in other states.
   BIG LAKE-CENTRAL MINNESOTA---Shipments 32-122-179---Movement expected
to increase slightly as all shippers are now marketing the crop in both
the Big Lake and Long Prairie areas.  Trading slow.  Prices lower. Round
Red U.S. One baled 5 10-pound film bags non size A mostly 5.25,  50
pound sacks size B mostly 8.00, tote bags approximately 2000 pounds per
cwt size A mostly 8.00-9.00.  July shipments in 2007 were 214,000 cwt,
2006 208,000 cwt, and 2005 117,000 cwt.
   SAN LUIS VALLEY COLORADO---Shipments 300-229**-149---Movement
expected to decrease seasonally.  Trading fairly slow.  Too few sales
reported to establish a market.  Very light supplies of old crop will
continue to be shipped through the month of August.  Colorado shippers
are actively marketing Kansas Russet Norkotah new crop.  July shipments
for Colorado in 2007 were 1,135,000 cwt, 2006 997,000 cwt, and 2005
1,141,000 cwt. LAST REPORT     **revised
   KERN DISTRICT CALIFORNIA---Shipments 273-249-102---Movement expected
to decrease seasonally.  Trading slow.  Too few sales to establish a
market. August 7-11 will complete shipments of the 2007 crop.  LAST
REPORT.
   HEREFORD-HI PLAINS DISTRICT TEXAS AND EASTERN NEW MEXICO---Shipments
66-57-97---Movement expected to decrease as the Round Red harvest
finishes.  Too few Russet Norkotah shippers and sales to establish a
market.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 5-21-65---Movement expected to
increase.  Trading slow.  Prices lower. Round Red U.S. One 50 pound
sacks size A 5.50-6.50, size B 9.00-10.00.  Round White U.S. One
50 pound sacks size A mostly 5.25-5.50.  Yellow type U.S. One 50 pound
sacks size A 9.00-10.00.   Russet Norkotah supply is increasing.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments 88-72**-61---Movement expected
to decrease seasonally.  Trading slow.  Prices lower.  Round White
50 pound sacks U.S. One size A mostly 6.00-7.00.  ** revised
   LOWER YAKIMA VALLEY AND COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON---Shipments
31-51-44 (includes exports of 1-4-6)---Movement expected to remain about
the same. Trading fairly slow.  Prices Yellow type size A lower, others
generally unchanged.  50 pound cartons Round Red U.S. One size A 7.00-
8.00, size B 12.00-14.00; Yellow type U.S. One size A mostly 10.00, size
B mostly 8.00.
   DELAWARE---Shipments 0-8-29---Movement expected to increase slightly
as marketing conditions improve.  Trading slow.  Round Red U.S. One
50 pound sacks size A mostly 7.00, size B 10.00-11.00.  Round White
50 pound sacks size A mostly 7.00, 2 1/4--4 1/2 inches 8.00-9.00.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON---Shipments 82-31-18 (includes exports
16**-8-1)---Shipments Umatilla Basin, Oregon 40-14-29 (includes exports
11-1-4)---Russet Norkotah remaining storage supplies in too few hands
to establish a market for the 2006 season.  2007 Season Shipments
0-22-124 (includes exports 0-3-32)---Movement expected to increase.
Trading fairly slow.  Prices lower.  Russet Norkotah U.S. One baled
5 10-pound film bags non size A 4.00-5.00, 50 pound cartons 40-50s 8.00-
9.00, 60-70s mostly 9.00, 80s mostly 8.00, 90s 7.00-7.50, 100s mostly
6.50-7.00.  According to the Washington State Inspection Service,
124,000 cwt of potatoes were exported during the month of July.
Countries include: Canada, El Salvador, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

   CENTRAL MICHIGAN---Shipments 6-5-10---Movement expected about the
same.  Most shipments diverted to local markets due to marketing
conditions.  Too few sales to establish a market. 	
   TWIN FALLS-BURLEY AND WESTERN DISTRICT IDAHO---Shipments 2007 Season
0-0-8---Shipments expected to increase as more shippers begin marketing
the crop.  Trading moderate.  Prices Russet Norkotah U.S. One baled
5 10-pound film bags non size A 5.00-5.25, 50-pound cartons 40s 11.50-
12.50, 50-70s 9.50, 80s 8.00-8.50, 90s 7.00-7.50, 100s 7.00.  Tuber size
varies in the first fields harvested but expected to improve.  FIRST
REPORT.
   KLAMATH BASIN (SOUTHERN OREGON AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA)---Shipments
18-8-3---Movement expected to decrease seasonally.  Too few sales
reported to establish a market.  A few shippers will run Columbia Basin
new crop until local supplies are available.  Local old crop supplies
are in few hands but will continue to be available into mid-August.  The
new crop Russet harvest is not anticipated to start until September 20,
with some Round Red harvest starting September 13.  LAST REPORT.
   NORTHWESTERN WASHINGTON---Shipments 0-0-0---Light supplies expected
to begin by August 13.  Additional growers will harvest by August 15-20.
Shipments of quantity sufficient to issue an F.O.B. report are not
anticipated until early September.  FIRST REPORT.
---POTATOES FOR PROCESSING
   UNITED STATES---UPDATE---Over the last two weeks, the U.S. Department
of Agriculture has issued invitations to bid on over 2 million cwt of
potatoes, on a raw basis.  About one-half are for raw potatoes for
processing and the other half for frozen potato products.
   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was fairly
slow.  Open-market prices paid to growers for Russet Burbank potatoes,
storage-run, bulk, per cwt, less dirt, rot and green tare, 1 5/8 inch
minimum, F.O.B. growers storage unless otherwise stated:  French-Fry
Quality 5.50-5.75 mostly 5.50.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments to Chippers 48-89-95---Movement
decrease seasonally.  Trading slow as most movement on preseason
contracts.  Sales to processors Round White 85% U.S. One mostly 1 5/8
inch minimum contract prices per hundredweight mostly 7.00-7.50.  Too
few open market sales to establish market.
   MICHIGAN---Shipments to Chippers 0-0-*---Movement expected to
increase as more growers begin the harvest.  Too few sales in establish
a market.  *unavailable
   PENNSYLVANIA---Initial light harvest expected to begin the week of
August 05.  FIRST REPORT.
