Mixed Picture for BirdseedsVANCOUVER - Jun 29/07 - SNS -- This year's seeded area estimates for the United States painted a mixed picture for North American birdseed ingredient markets. The USDA reports proso millet area is up over last year, rising 5% to 610,000 acres on higher planted acreage in Nebraska and South Dakota. On the other hand, safflower seeded area is down 10% at 170,000 acres and forecast harvest area down 9% at 162,500 acres. For sunflowers, the USDA is looking for confectionary sunflower area to rise 11% over last year to 324,000 acres, while oil-type sunflower area drops 7% to 1.54 million for a net 4% decrease in U.S. sunflower area to 1.86 million acres.
