U.S. Safflower Area DownWASHINGTON - Jun 29/07 - SNS -- Planted area of safflower decreased 10% from 2006, to 170,000 acres in the United States this year, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2007. Area for harvest is forecast at 162,500 acres, down 9% from last year. Tight water supplies in California contributed to producers only planting 50,000 acres in the State, down 11% from 2006. In Montana, renewed interest in safflower along with moderate temperatures and good soil moisture this spring resulted in Montana producers increasing their planted area by 36% from last year.
