Milk Output Rises in MayWASHINGTON - Jun 18/07 - SNS -- Milk production rose in the United States in May, reaching 14.9 billion pounds in the 23 major States, up 1.1% last year, according to the USDA. April revised production, at 14.5 billion pounds, was up 1.7% from April 2006. The April revision represented an increase of 14 million pounds or 0.1% from last month's preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,795 pounds for May, 13 pounds above May 2006. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.28 million head, 26,000 head more than May 2006, and 3,000 head more than April 2007.
