Canada Pursues Colombian FTAVANCOUVER - Jun 11/07 - SNS -- Whoever gave Canada's federal International Trade Minister David Emerson a slap on the side of the head last week deserves praise, say some specialty crop exporters in that country. With the U.S. Congress looking at ratifying a bilateral trade agreement with Colombia, the Canadian government has finally decided it is time to pursue its own free trade negotiations with Peru and Colombia. The decision was welcomed by the agriculture industry in general because, when ratified, the agreements with the United States would put Canada at a significant disadvantage in those traditional export markets because U.S. products will enter duty free and Canadian will not.
