Sweet Potato Crop Revised LowerWASHINGTON - Jun 11/07 - SNS -- Sweet Potato production for the 2006 crop year is revised to 16.2 million cwt, down 1% from the January Crop Production 2006 Summary but up 3% from 2005, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Area harvested, at 86,800 acres, is down less than 1% from January and 2% from 2005. The average yield, at 187 cwt per acre, is a record high yield, down 2 cwt from the January estimate but 9 cwt above 2005. Production in California, at 3.72 million cwt, is down 2% from January based on a 2% decrease in harvested acres. South Carolina production decreased 25% due to reduced acres and a 20 cwt drop in yield. Production is down 35% from January in Texas, where drought conditions during the 2006 growing season resulted in lower yields than previously expected.
