Ontario Amends Fuel Standards

TORONTO - Jun 1/07 - SNS -- Changes to Ontario's fuel standards will help increase demand for ethanol and other biofuels, believes GreenField Ethanol.

Ontario is now committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the province's transportation fuel by 10% by 2020.

"This accord will create the need for more ethanol - a renewable fuel that is less expensive than gasoline, has a low carbon content and is made here in Ontario," said GreenField Ethanol's President and CEO Robert Gallant.

Gasoline companies have a variety of low carbon options to help them meet the 10% reduction. These include switching refinery feedstock from heavy crude oil to lighter, sweeter grades, expanding the availability of E-85 ethanol and increasing the amount of ethanol in gasoline from the current Ontario mandate of 5%.

The most sensible option for oil companies is to blend ethanol with gasoline to help them meet their reduction targets, argues ethanol producer Gallant.
