Net Decline in Hawaiian Tropical FruitWASHINGTON - May 11/07 - SNS -- Hawaiian output of fruits other than papaya was down last year because of a smaller guava crop, according to the USDA's latest crop estimates. Utilized production in Hawaii for 2006 is estimated at 7.40 million pounds, 9% lower than utilized production in 2005. Harvested area totaled 365 acres, 41% below the area harvested in 2005. Guava yield (based on utilized production) averaged 20,300 pounds per acre, compared with 13,100 pounds in 2005. Weather conditions in guava orchards were generally poor during the first quarter of the year. Hawaii banana production for 2006 is estimated at 20.0 million pounds, up 18% from the initial forecast but 4% lower than last year.
