Saskatchewan Seeding 10% Complete

REGINA - May 7/07 - SNS -- Seeding this year's crop is now 10% complete in Saskatchewan, identical to the recent 5-year average and up one point over this time last year, according to the latest crop progress report from Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food.

Seeding is most advanced in the southwest at 22% complete, versus 16% planted in the southeast, and 7% planted in west central regions. Less than 3% is planted elsewhere.

Topsoil moisture conditions are reported as adequate on three-quarters of the grainbelt. While areas of surplus moisture are slowly decreasing, north eastern regions still report more than 70% as surplus. Some areas of short topsoil moisture are reported in the southern and central grainbelts.

The May 1, 2007 Stubble Subsoil Moisture map shows an improvement in stored soil water over much of the area south of the No. 1 highway, though pockets of very dry to dry still remain. North of the No. 1 highway generally has good to very good subsoil moisture.
